What is whisky?
The term whisky refers to a distilled, alcoholic beverage that is produced from fermented grain mash. Grains like barley, rye, wheat or corn can be used to make whisky. To give them their special taste and a nicer colour, most whiskies are matured in oak casks for several years.
Is there Swiss whisky?
Although Scotland, Ireland and US are considered “the” whisky countries, whisky is produced in many other countries as well – including Switzerland. However, since the production of alcohol from grain was forbidden in Switzerland until 1999, the Swiss whisky industry is still relatively young.
How does Swiss whisky taste?
And how does a whisky from Switzerland taste like? Of course, it’s difficult to make these types of general statement. However, there are a few characteristics in which Swiss whiskies seem to be similar to each other. For example, most Swiss whiskies appear relatively fruity and spicy. Also, compared to many traditional whiskies, Swiss whiskies are less peaty. This makes whiskies from Switzerland ideal for whisky beginners.
What special whisky brands exist in Switzerland?
Säntis Malt
The whisky with the name Säntis Malt comes from Appenzell and is produced by the established brewery Locher. The family business is famous for its Appenzeller beer and entered the whisky market in 1999 when the distillation ban was abolished. Säntis Malt is produce from grain from Swiss mountain regions as well as spring water from the Appenzell Alps.
Rugenbräu
Rugenbräu is another traditional brewery that entered the whisky market. Until 2008, the company exclusively produced different types of beer, including dark beer, lager, premium beer, unfiltered beer and non-alcoholic beer. Since March 2008, Rugenbräu is represented on the whisky market with its own line of premium whiskies. The company focuses mostly on single malt whiskies.
