What is rum?
Rum is a distilled alcoholic beverage which is created from products of the sugarcane. Besides sugarcane juice, sugarcane molasses can be used. After fermentation, the spirit is first distilled and matures later for several months up to several years depending on the type of rum.
What is white rum?
The term white rum refers to rums which are as clear and transparent as water. They are to be distinguished from golden or brown rums, which come with a golden or brown tint.
How is white rum different from brown or golden rum?
The reason why white rums are considered different from brown or golden rums has less to do with the colour but with how it is produced: After distillation, rum is always white; only after a maturation of a few years, it first takes on a golden tint and then a deeper brown colour.
Due to this fact, white rums are regarded as lighter and simpler in flavour, while golden or brown rums are considered more mature, complex and aromatic. Thats why brown rums are more suited for enjoying them pure while white rums are most often used for the creation of mixed drinks.
So much for theory. In practice, its unfortunately not that easy: Many producers add caramel colour to their rum to give the impression of a more matured rum of higher-quality. Additionally, its possible to filter the golden or brown colour out of the rum, which can make an aged rum appear white again.
Thats why you should never rely on the colour of a rum no matter if youre looking for a young or an older rum. Instead, its important to search for more information on the label. Often, matured rums can be recognized from terms like anejo, reserva or gran reserva.
