The peppermint plant
Peppermint is a spice plant and is a cross of watermint and spearmint. Among the mints, it stands out for its high menthol and low carvone content, which leads to its pleasant spicy flavour. In the leaves of the plant, ethereal oils can be found, which are used for the production of many different foods. In a high concentration, these oils have an antimicrobial and antiviral effect, which is why they’re often used for stomach and gall issues.
What is peppermint liqueur?
Peppermint liqueur is a liqueur that is produced with a base of peppermint. Typically, the spirit has an alcohol content of 15 – 25% and contains water, sugar and peppermint essence. What makes this spirit so special is not just its aromatic flavour but also its spicy scent. To be considered a liqueur, the beverage has to contain at least 100 grams of sugar per litre.
How is peppermint liqueur produced?
To create peppermint liqueur, peppermint leaves are first soaked in alcohol. During the maceration, the aromas are extracted and absorbed by the spirit. Afterwards, the flavoured spirit is blended with sugar to create the liqueur.
How to drink peppermint liqueur
Peppermint liqueur can be consumed on its own and can be very popular as a party drink. As a shot, the drink is great for warming up on a cold evening or for relaxing after an exhausting day. The combination with hot chocolate is especially popular: The dark, warm aromas of the chocolate combine wonderfully with the refreshing notes of the peppermint. Another popular combination is with chocolate syrup in cocktails.
What peppermint liqueur brands are there?
It’s not surprising that most successful peppermint liqueurs come from regions where the cultivation of peppermint has a long tradition. The most popular peppermint liqueur brands include the Finnish brand Minttu, the German Nordbrand, which is also known as “Pfeffi”, Lütje Minze from Schleswig-Holstein and the French Giffard Menthe Pastille liqueur.
