What is liqueur?
The term liqueur refers to a spirit with a sugar content of at least 100 g per litre. Most liqueurs contain between 15 and 40 percent alcohol, however, there are some liqueurs with a substantially higher alcohol content. Liqueurs come in a multitude of varieties – among the most popular ones are herbal liqueur, fruit liqueur, coffee liqueur, egg liqueur and cream liqueur.
What is cream liqueur?
Cream liqueur is the name of a spirit which fits the definition of liqueur and which contains cream among other ingredients. The amount of cream is not defined and varies depending on the producer and the type of liqueur. What makes cream liqueur so special are its intense aromas and its creamy consistency. The cream can also help to refine the aroma of the original spirit.
Cream liqueur vs. crème
Be careful with the term „crème”. A crème is a type of liqueur that has nothing to do with cream liqueur although it may sound like it. Instead, a so-called crème is a liqueur with a sugar content of at least 250 g per litre. Crèmes de cassis have to contain as much as 400 g sugar per litre.
What types of cream liqueur are there?
The world of cream liqueur is big and creative. Among the most popular cream liqueurs are the Irish cream and the fruit cream liqueur.
Irish Cream
Irish cream is a term for Irish cream liqueurs which are produced using a base of Irish whiskey. Besides sugar, cream and whiskey, many Irish cream liqueurs also contain flavouring additives – for example, coffee or cacao. Irish creams are not only popular on their own or in cocktails, they are also great in hot drinks. The most popular Irish cream liqueur brands include Baileys, Kerrygold, Coole Swan, Feeneys and Merrys.
Fruit cream liqueur
Fruit cream liqueurs can be produced in many different ways. To the base distillate, which can consist of a neutral spirit or a fruit spirit, fruit juices or nectars can be added.
Another possibility is to macerate the fruits. To do this, whole fruits or pieces of fruits (for example, orange peels) are soaked in orange to extract their aromas. The flavoured distillate is then blended with sugar. How much cream is added differs from liqueur to liqueur. One of the most interesting fruit cream liqueurs in Amarula which is made from a distillate from the wild marula fruit.
How to drink cream liqueur
Due to its sweet and creamy taste, cream liqueur is not only suitable for pure consumption, it is also great in mixed drinks of all kinds. The most popular drinks include B52, Bloody Mary, White Serbia, Orgasmus and Tropical Night.
